My Life Story: From a Office Boy to a Technology Professional: My Journey of Perseverance and Growth

Introduction:

In a world where success stories often feature glamorous beginnings and seamless transitions, my journey from an office boy to an automation developer has been marked by hardships, determination, and relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth. Over the span of 18+ years, I have honed my skills, gained valuable experience, and carved a path that has led me to where I am today.

The Early Years:

My career started in 2005 at the age of 17 when I took up a job as an office boy at Fine Art Press at Amritsar. With a modest salary of 1500 rs., I embraced various odd tasks such as product representation, doing dishes, cleaning, and other menial chores. I worked there for One and Half month to get the salary of my first month. I quit the job and did not return anywhere near to that place. I was very fearful, shy since childhood. This introvert nature of me have huge impact on my life, it has its own positives and negatives in the life.
In my Second job as Office Boy at a broker’s office. I again was doing similar menial jobs bringing their lunches, doing dishes, dusting, cleaning, opening and closing the shop on daily basis. It was during this time that I learned the value of hard work and perseverance, despite the challenges that came my way.

A Glimpse of the Corporate World:

My first taste of a computer-based job came through a contest, where I had the opportunity to work in the back office of a mobile sales office. While the preferred candidate was selected for a different role, I became a personal assistant to a boss, gaining valuable experience for six months. Despite the meager salary of 2500 rs. per month, I realized that long working hours and lack of respect were not conducive to my growth, leading me to resign from that position.

Navigating the Job Market:

Subsequently, I ventured into a computer operator role at a stockbroker’s office. Although it entailed a lower salary of 2000 rs., the working hours were relatively less demanding. However, an unintentional error resulted in a substantial loss for a client, and fearing the consequences, I chose not to return to that job.

Exploring Various Roles:

In my pursuit of finding a suitable job, I landed a position at an air ticketing agency office. However, the role primarily involved clerical work with no computer usage, which did not align with my aspirations. After only a month, I made the decision to quit and continue my search for the right opportunity.

Embracing the Call Center Trend:

The rise of call center jobs caught my attention, and I decided to undergo training to improve my chances of employment. Following a brief training period, I attended an interview for a domestic call center in my town, and fortunately, I was selected. Joining Kochar Infotech Ltd. in Amritsar, I found myself earning a monthly salary of 3600 rs. with additional night allowances. This job marked a turning point for me as it provided stability and a sense of achievement.

Taking Risks and Facing Challenges:

Despite the comfort of my job at the domestic call center, I took a leap of faith and joined an international BPO, Orbit International. Juggling both jobs, I worked tirelessly from 5 am to 11 pm, motivated by the prospects of growth. However, issues arose with the owners, and salary irregularities compounded my concerns, ultimately leading me to quit that job. Due to my low self-esteem I had absconded myself from previous domestic job where I worked for 18 months. I didn’t have the courage to get my work experience from that company as I feared to face HRs of the companies. I was without any work experience at the end.

Trials and Triumphs:

During a period of unemployment and uncertainty, I returned to my family’s labor-intensive work. I worked with from April 2008 to Dec 2008 while regretting my decision of career. I went to my hometown in Dec. 2008 to get some peace of mind. I always liked my hometown since childhood, its located at foothills of the Himalayas (Palampur, Himachal Pradesh). I enjoyed the free life style for few months in the beginnig. But that thought of jobless and aimless life was playing at back of my mind. And I was in the grip of depression and wanted to live alone all the time. I used to pull myself by reading some English Newspaper’s Career Additions that use to come on Wednesdays. I used to prepare for interview question answers, English vocabulary etc. But I was clueless about how to move ahead. I had never been to a city apart from my birthplace Amritsar so going to places like Chandigarh and living there gave me frightening thoughts of how will I survive there. All this went by for good 8-9 months. Relatives coming to our place and giving lectures on trying this that in career and that fight inside my mind which was going on. It was very difficult for me. I never had the courage to call it quits too. it was totally a hopeless state for me. I stopped facing people anyone and not worrying about what they think of me.

However, the dissatisfaction and depression that ensued drove me to seek a fresh start. With the help of a relative, I traveled to Chandigarh at one of our relatives (whom I shall always be thankful for the support) and secured a job at Tata Sky Process under TBSS Company in Mohali, Chandigarh. This opportunity marked a ray of hope, and I embraced it wholeheartedly to rebuild everything from scratch in my career.

Unyielding Dedication:

While working at the domestic BPO for 18 months, where I earned a salary of approximately 8,000 rs., I received an enticing opportunity to work at an international IT company. Despite my previous career setback, I mustered the courage to transition to this new role. I transformed my domestic BPO job into a part-time position and dedicated myself to the international company full-time. Balancing two jobs was demanding, as my schedule involved waking up at 7:30 am, working from 9 am to 1 pm, catching a cab, and then working from 7 pm to 4 am. Despite the challenges, this decision proved to be a crucial step toward building a successful career.

A New Phase at Dell Technologies:

After 26 months of hard work and dedication at the international IT company, I received a remarkable opportunity to join Dell Technologies. The salary leap to 25k+ rs. in hand was a significant milestone for me. Joining as a Technical Support Executive, I explored different departments within Dell, including back-office operations and automation moderation. Currently, I am thriving as Project Managment Professional and prior to it, i worked as an automation developer, utilizing my skills in Python and RPA tools to drive efficiency and innovation.

Entrepreneurial Ventures and Ambitions:

Apart from my corporate journey, I have always nurtured a desire to build my own startup and harness my creative potential. I had the opportunity to assist a friend in establishing a web design agency called Agyle Studio . Witnessing the growth and impact of this venture inspired me to build Himfarms an agro-tech startup . I have also been attempting to slowly build an inspiring blog for sustainable and innovative community building through Panchurkhi portal. Another attempt is going in parallel to empower the artists of Himachal Pradesh through Himkalaa.

There have been many efforts apart from these ones that I have tried in span of my life till now. I’ve failed numerous times, yet I keep trying. I feel its the supreme entity that keep giving us the directions in our life.

I aspire to build a better world by solving the problems of our society.

Future Aspirations:

With over a decade of experience and a wealth of knowledge under my belt, I envision a future where I can utilize my skills and mindset to their fullest potential. Whether it involves building successful startups or attaining influential positions within reputable companies, I am determined to make a lasting impact in the fields of IT, automation, and data science. Concurrently, I am pursuing an online Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (Data Science) to enhance my technical expertise and stay abreast of the latest advancements in the field.

Closing Thoughts:

My journey from being an office boy to an automation developer has been filled with ups and downs, challenges, and moments of triumph. Fear and shyness gripped me tightly throughout my journey, inhibiting my ability to communicate effectively and express myself freely. Social situations felt overwhelming, and the mere thought of engaging in conversations with strangers caused anxiety to surge within me. This self-imposed limitation held me back both personally and professionally, preventing me from fully embracing opportunities and building meaningful connections.

Still through sheer determination, resilience, and a hunger for growth, I have transformed my career and continuously pushed myself to achieve greater heights. The lessons learned along the way have shaped my character, instilling in me the values of hard work, adaptability, and unwavering dedication. As I look toward the future, I am excited to embrace new opportunities, drive innovation, and leave a lasting legacy in the ever-evolving world of technology.
